ICON 2010+ Toyota FJ Cruiser / 4Runner Suspension System Stage 1
ICON Toyota Tacoma suspension systems are designed with maximum performance and the serious driver in mind. ICON engineers’ primary focus is to increase wheel travel and damping ability, which translates into outstanding vehicle control and ride quality both on and off-road. Starting with the basics, ICON takes a modular approach to their kits. ICON has put tremendous effort into ensuring that these kits can be bolted on and require no serious or permanent mods to an already durable and proven vehicle platform. Their rigorous ICON 1K testing process ensures that everything they sell is ready to see serious and sustained abuse in demanding environments. Starting out with a 2.5” body front coilover, 2.0 monotube rear shock and tuned 2” rear lift spring in Stage 1, ICON applies their vast knowledge of shock tuning to a proven vehicle platform. Stage 2 adds DELTA JOINT upper control arms to increase available down travel and correct your caster geometry. The Stage 3 kit builds further on the basics and adds adjustable rear lower control arms to help re-center the rear axle in the wheel well, increase articulation, and tighten up the road feel. Stage 4 upgrades all shocks 2.5” bodies with, with remote reservoirs in the rear; Stage 5 upgrades the front shocks to 2.5” remote reservoirs. Moving up from there, Stage 6 includes the complete package of rear links, with replacement adjustable upper links and an adjustable rear track bar; Stage 7 adds ICON’s Compression Damping Control Valve (CDCV) to the front and rear shocks.
Toyota’s light duty SUV platforms share a lot of their front suspension design with the Tacoma, but have the added improvement of a 5-link rear suspension with coils in back. This design difference insures excellent performance with more stable handling, essentially eliminating axle wrap and wheel hop. When lifting any linked vehicle, the arms usually need to be longer or made adjustable to fine tune alignment and wheel position. ICON goes one step further than most, and builds arms with a high quality FK rod end at one end of each arm. When coupled with a urethane bushing at the other, you end up with an arm that is not only adjustable but has significantly better articulation and less lateral deflection than a stock bonded rubber bushing. ICON’s billet arms go one step further and offer easy on vehicle adjustment of the arm thanks to their unique double adjuster and pinch bolt system.
To combat the design constraints of a uniball joint, ICON developed their proprietary Delta Joint. This joint offers not only comparable wheel travel, but greatly improved wear and durability thanks to it’s metal on metal construction and sealed upper housing. Kits spec’d with billet upper control arms showcase ICON’s mastery of CNC machinery and offer the ability to fine tune alignment geometry on vehicle; FK rod ends at the frame side ensure minimal deflection with maximum durability. The fabricated tubular steel arms provide a tremendous increase in strength over stock, at a more reasonable price point and use urethane bushings at the frame side for better isolation from vibration. All ICON upper arms correct caster geometry, an important consideration when lifting IFS Toyotas, so you will have better steering feel than stock.
ICON’s CDCV valve equipped shocks feature the same professionally tuned, application specific valving as their other shocks, but with the added benefit of 10 clicks of easy to use external adjustments. These adjusters allow the end user to quickly change the vehicle’s ride quality based on terrain and load. All 2.5” diameter rear shocks also feature an integrated ‘Bump Zone’ to further help with end-stroke damping progression and keep the vehicle in better control in the harshest of terrain. Since these shocks are located in a low and vulnerable position, we recommend ICON’s stainless shin guards for anyone who plans to use their kit for its intended purpose in the dirt.
NOTE: Vehicles with KDSS will require ICON’s rear track bar, if not already included in the Stage kit.
